    Build and Skin:

One of the popular names for this African canine has been that of ‘Painted Dog,’ which incidentally refers to the splotchy, multi-coloured nature of its fur coat. The texture work on this avatar does well to capture the fur patterns in an attractive way that makes it distinct, but not straining to the eye. A concerted effort has gone into applying a little shading and highlights across the fur to bring out the musculature and the spinal cord, and separation between fur colours are well detailed and defined. In all, the skin seems like an painted palette of colours that befits the style of avatar well. The sexes on this avatar used to be sold separately, but now both genders are available in one box.

The feet are standard; 4 thick, multi-coloured toes with variation to suit the patchwork nature of the avatar’s skin. The front of the feet are tipped with blunt claws, while the undersides have simple paw-pads. The digitigrade legs make a smooth transition from the feet to the avatar shape leg, though the textures look slightly stretched on the front. Despite the complexity and randomness of the patterns on this avatar, it is nice to see that there has been an attempt at continuity.

The hand attachments on this avatar are a little bit on the bulky side, because the palms cover up the shape’s hand underneath. The palm, which presents 2 sculpted paw-pads on the underside is large enough to dwarf the decently sized finger-digits. While a little on the stubbier side, the finger digits come in a set of 5 to accommodate the hand-positions that users can choose (middle finger, etc.). Given that the rest of the avatar has a good bit of texture variation, the fingers could have done with different textures on each one; each finger reuses the same texture.

The tail is usable either as a sculpted form or the flexi-tailed form. Users can choose between the two using the HUD or by the included commands. They are both textured well, but the sculpted tail looks fluffier and carries over the texture-style of the rest of the avatar very nicely compared to the flexible one.

As with most any avatar, the head is the most important attachments because it defines the entirety of the avatar. Most of the face is dark on this avatar, but ample shading and highlighting coined with good colour and sculpting make the face look distinct and sharp. The muzzle takes up most of the avatar’s face, somewhat triangular from the front, growing thick towards the cheeks of the avatar. As mentioned before, most of the face is black, including the muzzle and the cheeks, so careful texturing is used to make them stand out; including the nose at the tip. In normal lighting, however, it can be sometimes difficult to see the actual face because of the dark fur.

The muzzle comes with a few different facial expressions, including the obligatory smile, but also a growl. The lips curl back and the fangs are exposed in this facial expression, which really gives off a very displeased expression, especially if users use an appropriate eyebrow expression setting with it. The interior of the mouth is well made, with a yellowish tint to the teeth and fairly prominent gums.

The eyes are another part that stand out on the head because of the darkness of the face and the size of the muzzle. These are set above the tall muzzle, which makes the cheeks underneath bigger, and the bright textures contrast with the dark black of the muzzle and cheeks. These eyes are attached to the eyeball attachment spots underneath the head, so they move on their own. The sculpted blink is decently smooth as well.

Above the eyes, the sculpts give way to a slightly thickly ridged brow that starts a transition from black to the colour that makes up most of the avatar. The patterning is well conceived and brings some texture variety to the front, and even the back of the head with a dark stripe running down the back. The ears are perched atop the head, very well shaped and textured with semi-transparent fluff on the interior.  The ears really push the head to channel more of the character of the Wild Dog.

    Customisation:

This avatar is very easy to customise as it is copy-mod. The head-shape is a bit more spherical than most of Tokushi’s later offerings, but users should not have any real issue adding their own third-party hairs to the avatar.

    Conclusion:

This avatar is one of the first few that Tokushi released a few years ago. Therefore, it doesn’t compare to some of the other avatars that they and other competitors have released since 2007, but still remains a fun avatar for anyone who wants to diversify their collection or merely don the image of a Painted Dog. As we’ve always mentioned, it’s a pleasure to again review avatars that show the evolution of creators’ style and skills.
