The Lupan is Rez-Fantazy’s fourth avatar to the market. With obvious wolf influences, this creature is decidedly close to an interpretation to a werewolf. In this review, we re-visit the creator’s progress as they continually try to improve.

Build and Skin:

As usual, Rez Fantazy has very good texturing on their avatar. The fur over the avatar is multi-toned, which makes the skins more in line with those of real-world wolves. Additionally, there has been a lot of detail that revolves around fur-like brushstrokes and changes in colour shades. In all, we see a very organic and non-uniform skin that is very presentable from both up close and afar. It is pleasing to see this level of texture quality applied to the entire avatar. The major differences are that for the males, we see more defined six-packs and pecs, while females have a softer looking front, with a little definition around the breasts. As with their recent avatars, the mature skins are featured separately for those who wish to utilise them.

We begin our review of the attachments with the feet attachments as usual. The creator has branched out to create feet that are much more detailed with longer, more detailed toes, but the splits space between the toes goes too far back towards the heel of the paw. The wide footpaws merge into thick digitigrade legs that are sized to the tall body shape. As a whole, therefore, the digitigrade legs are decent. However, they could have benefited from the bend in the digitigrade leg being lower and more distinct rather than looking like a simple arch.

One thing that I should mention is that there has been an improvement in the build quality in general; the sculpt prim wrinkling has been greatly reduced over each of the attachments, though you unfortunately see a fair bit on the bottom front of the toes. The tail is flexible and wags from side to side occasionally. This too has good textures, but it is a touch ‘stringy’ and could have been made to look a little more full.

Like we have seen with a few creators before (e.g. EXL), the hand attachments have four relatively thick fingers on a hand-paw that leans more towards the likeness of a hand than a paw. The hand is complete with a palm of sorts, but relative to the fingers, the palm is very small and flat, which makes the hand-paws look slightly disproportionate. As a whole, it is encouraging to see that the attachments on the avatar have been placed with care to be much more symmetrical than previous avatars.

Finally, we can discuss the head. The avatar comes with a luxurious mane of hair that goes down between the shoulders. Appreciably, it is a separate attachment, so users are able to attach and detach the hair at will to change the hairstyles. A second detail that fleshes out the head is the use of sculpted fluff that frames the head from just behind the ears to the back of the bottom jaw. These add more character to the avatar’s head in framing the face.

A major focal point for the avatar is the eyes as well. These are some of the most detailed that I have seen from Rez Fantazy; with a sculpted blink and bright eye texture. The only real issue with the eyes is the placement, though. The forehead is very flat and the skull before the muzzle is wide, so the eyes end up looking out to the sides more than towards the front. Eyes towards the sides of the head are usually encountered in animals of prey. Additionally, this placement makes the avatar look better from the side than head-on at the front.

At last, we reach the muzzle. We can see what the creator had attempted in terms of shape, however the final product is not perfect. In particular, we find that the sculpts are not as smooth as they could be, which detracts from users noticing the effort that went into the overall shape of the muzzle and the bottom jaw. As a result, the muzzle appears lopsided despite the fact that it is now symmetrical. When the mouth is closed, we see a pretty powerful overbite of sharp teeth. When the mouth opens, we see a fair rendition of muzzle-talk, though if one looks deep enough inside, they can see the head prim poking through the interior.

Heads-Up Display (HUD) and Features:

The avatar comes with a Sound Display that allows users to click and make a Wolf Snarl or Howl. The sounds are cute and fun, but the HUD does not do any more than that. These sounds come with text gestures so you can type commands to make them occur without the HUD. Finally, the paw-prints that the avatar’s feet leave behind are also toggled by command only.

Customisation:

This avatar is modifiable and copiable, so users should, like with most avatars, be able to modify and change different features of the avatar to their heart’s content. Third-party hairs are easier to apply to this avatar because you do not need to de-link the included hair, but fitting the hairs to the head shape may prove a little difficult to amateur builders.

Conclusion:

The Rez Fantazy Lupan is another marker in the continual growth of the Rez Fantazy avatar brand. We still see some of the issues that have unfortunately plagued Rez Fantazy in the past, but are yet pleased to see that the creator is still growing and moving to correct these shortcomings. All of that aside, for people who wish to don an avatar that channels the power of a Werewolf-like creature and can look past some of the more difficult flaws, this avatar can provide.

Just as a note to add, the creator released the “pink” version of this avatar today, January 2, as a freebie to group members. This information was posted to both the creator’s blog and to the secondlife_furs community on Livejournal.

Looks more like an Eldricht Abomination to me. Just..that head. THE HEAD. And everything else.

Poor thing looks like it has a cleft palate. Did they honestly think that head looked good, or wolf-like at all?
