  • We have the pleasure of reviewing the first commercial offering from ‘Nadi,’ a furry avatar that is fashioned after a jumping rat that inhabits Asia and Northern Africa. In this review we discuss the avatar, but also the attempt the creator has made at including both accessories and clothing with the avatar.

    Build and Skin:

The skin on this avatar is fairly simple, with the body usually made up of two tones of one or two different colours. Any lines drawn on the avatar body are clean cut and not blurry, with little gradations and speckles throughout to make sure the textures do not look flat. For the female version of the avatar, the breasts are textured with a little shadow to give them more definition, and nipples are baked into the body texture. The usage of these effective texturing skills covers the entire avatar from head to toe.

The avatar comes with large feet that one would expect for a jumping creatures in the desert.  There are no abnormalities in the sculpts at all, and the textures are clean. The avatar comes with digitigrade attachments which create a smooth connection from foot and leg attachments to the avatar shape. An added plus is that the avatar comes with pre-fit legwarmers which can be made visible or invisible by single-clicking the digi legs. These legwarmers are well sculpted and a neat fashion ndjerboaleapaddition to the avatar, much like what Dark Spot Designs has provided with their avatars.

For some users, however, the legs may seem to be almost too thick in a way that makes the avatar shape and the head look smaller when compared to the feet. However, this could be attributed to the fact that this avatar is not striving for absolute realism but instead aims for a simple cartoon image. The avatar has no handpaws so do not expect them, though one can easily make hand-paws by themselves using copies of the feet. The tail is curvy and has neatly placed tufts of fur that give it a neatly tasselled tail-tip. All in all, while simple, the attachments really do their purpose gracefully.

Finally, we can move on to the head. The creator has taken the initiative to give the head a unique look that’s distinctively mousey in appearance. The head is well sized, and tapers off to a small, but boxy muzzle with a few flexible prim whiskers. There is no muzzle-talk with this avatar, but that isn’t so much a major issue with the avatar as the looks help make up for the lack of it.

A huge focal point foint for the avatar are the eyes; they are large and textured well.  The eyelids are sculpted, so therefore the blinks are as well. Perhaps the one criticism in regards to the eyes would be that the eyelid prims could have been more flush with the head prim. Alternatively, a positive aspect to the head was the usage of shading to give the avatar a little shadow under the brow. The ears stand out on this avatar since they’re large and give the impression of softness. As usual, any tufts of fur are sculpted and non-transparent, adding to the polished semi-cartoonish aspect of the avatar.

    Features:

This avatar comes with many extra features that offer expansive options for avatar customisation.

Briefly, I will point out the genitalia. Nadi is one of few creators who offer genitals with their furry avatars, and as such, alongside the baked nipple textures for female wearers, there comes a sculpted vagina for females, and a sculpted penis for males (clickable with 3 states). These are simple additions which accompany the avatar and a picture is provided in a following link.

Next, the avatar comes with a large number of outfits which can be seen below. It is a neat to get a choice between legwarmers, shorts, pants, boxers, skirts, hoodies, and even armour.

Finally, the avatar comes with a complementary pair of glasses and a muzzle for the face, pictured below.

    Heads up Display (HUD):

For this avatar, the HUD controls all of its features save for clothing and the legwarmers. Without any text commands, therefore, there is a need for a well organised and fully functional HUD. Something that Nadi has provided with a modern and aesthetic looking HUD.

As mentioned before, the HUD controls the ears, eyes, hair, and tail options.

    Conclusion:

This avatar is well rounded and a neat little addition to the community of rodents in Second Life, and offers an avatar similar to the previously available avatars from Samara Nerd. While I’ve found people mistaking this avatar for a kangaroo rat, it stands on its own next to Tokushi’s Bilby and Samara Nerd’s (Formerly of Luskwood Bunkies) own rodent-y avatars. We look forward to seeing what Nadi continues to create in the near future.
