Observations:

Quality:

  • Skin and Textures:
    • The skin for this avatar is up to the usual DSD standards
    • Females generally receive more shading on the breasts, males receive prevalent abs. Some users may find the abs a little overstated and overpowering for the avatar.
    • The avatar comes with both a male and a female skin; females receive a full set of textured nipples and bits, while males receive just nipples. As we’ve seen before, the nipples appear as if they rest atop the fur. (Warning, Link is RATED MATURE)
    • Overall, the avatar’s textures are fairly strong, managing to portray that of a fox’s fur patterning while using brush-strokes to make the colour transitions more believable. A strong suit to this avatar is that the textures.
    • This avatar comes with two different types of skins; a “Red Fox” variety, and a more generic ‘Fox’ variety. The difference between the two is only in whether the skin includes the typical vulpine ‘sock/gloves.’ Users can unpackage either when they rez the box.

  • Build Quality:
    • The avatar’s construction is sound, with no wrinkling found anywhere on any of the attachments. Like the textures, this upholds the quality of build that Dark Spot Designs has set for themselves. All of the sculpts are smooth, and the design and construction was done in a way to minimise any kind of creasing between prims. About the only location where users may notice creasing is right below the eyebrows; between the eyes.
    • Additionally, the avatar comes across as being symmetrical; there is no lopsidedness in the attachments.

Attachments:

Lower Body:

  • As usual , Dark Spot Designs offers very competent legs which suit the avatar perfectly. The transition from the body shape to the leg is fairly smooth, and the entire leg structure looks like a believable limb. The foxy fur fluff on the back of the leg might seem out of place for some people since there’s no other prim fluff like it anywhere else on the body besides the cheeks.

  • The feet and the legs come default with invisiprims enabled, so to disable them, just click the “Invisiprim” option in the HUD and then wear the alpha layer skin in the “Accessories” folder.
  • This avatar comes with two different types of feet, as we’ve seen with the prior-released Dark Spot Designs Cheetah. The ordinary paw-based feet work extremely well with the included digitigrade legs. Users are able to adjust the textures of the claws, the paw-pads, and each toe. Overall, the digitigrade version of this avatar’s lower limbs are very well made.
  • This avatar comes with plantigrade feet, based more on human feet. They have the exact same amount of customisation that you have with the paw-based feet (i.e. claw/toe/paw-pads) and feature a great paw-foot cross that leans more to the human form.
  • Users get a flexible tail with this avatar; remaining true to vulpine fashion with a bushy ‘brush.’ The textures for the tail do an excellent of making sure the tail matches the body and have a floofy appearance. As is custom with Dark Spot Designs, users can change the fluffiness of their tail, as well as its length and other customisation options. Some users may find themselves wishing to make the tail a little shorter and more floofy.

Upper Body:

  • The hands follow suit with the plantigrade feet in being a 50/50 cross between human hands and feline paw. The fingers are all re-colourable (3 different texture choices, and like the feet), the claws are retractable. (Yes, red foxes have partially retractable claws).

Head:

General Impression:

  • At first glance, this avatar manages to pull off a fox face with some accuracy, particularly from the side view. The head seems to sit in the middle of the spectrum of realistic avatars and cartoony ones, allowing for the creator to remain true to the target species, while having a little artistic licensing with the facial features.

Muzzle:

  • The muzzle on this avatar is medium length, thus not being too long or too short for the face. Overall, the size suits the headshape and size perfectly. Some could argue that they wish that the muzzle were a little longer, but that really is left to personal opinion. Otherwise, the muzzle makes for one of the better fox muzzles that I have reviewed. The interior is strongly textured and features excellent teeth. The tongue also comes with a few different states, including curled in, curled out, and more.

Eyes:

  • The face of this fox features almond-shaped eyes that suit the face equally as well as the muzzle. Users are able to switch between a few different facial expressions, including Sad, Alert, and a more. Each of the eyebrow expressions are expressive, and have a plethora of options, including changing state while typing/away/busy, or choosing blink speed.
  • The avatar comes with three different eyeball textures, each with a different style that adds a little something new to the avatar. The eye shine transparency is adjustable, as well as the pupil size. One criticism that I have for the irises is that the textures have a very rough and grainy look to them which detracts a bit from the overall cuteness and smoothness of the face.
  • The only other criticism that we can offer on the head is the crease between the forehead and the area between the eyes, which, depending on the colouration of avatar that you purchase or eyebrow expression you wear, may be more prominent or not.

Overall, the head comes together nicely as a reproduction of a fox in anthropomorphic form. Aided with cheek fluff to round out the face, and versatile, prim-fluff-lined ears, the look is complete. In the next Sub-Heading, users will see all of the options available to this avatar in a photo.

Features and Heads-Up Display (HUD):

This avatar is completely controlled by the HUD. The HUD itself features one of two commissioned photos; either a sassy naked female with strategically placed butterflies, or a smug-looking male fox. Both photos were very well done. The photos above show all of the controls of the HUD, and by extension, almost every single option that this avatar has. The HUD is very user-friendly, which is helpful in a case of so many features.

As usual, the “Accessories” folder houses all of the optional items for this avatar. The avatar comes with alternate versions of the head with piercings as shown above. Dark Spot Designs usually surprises me with how often they work on making new piercings and their placement. You can select which piercings you want to have visible, and change some of the colours or textures of piercings by left-clicking and holding until the dialogue menu comes up. As you can also see in the photo above, rather than coming with the customary leg-warmers, this avatar comes with a little shoulder-bunny, which, besides being extremely cute, will match the colouration of the avatar purchased. This little bunny is modifiable, so you can keep it around as a house decoration as well.

Customisation:

This avatar comes as being both modifiable and copiable, so users are able to modify the avatar very easily. Coupled with the HUD options, users are able to easily wear third-party hairs made for human heads or apply modkits.

Conclusion:

The Dark Spot Designs Fox is a very competent avatar that achieves a foxish look while keeping the creator’s signature style. Overall, the avatar is fairly versatile, as I’ve noticed modkits available for it already. Dark Spot Designs has settled into a pattern of the creation of cute avatars that have some appeal, while remaining completely unique. The features and the accessories, are as usual, extremely flexible and bountiful, adding an extra dimension of customisation for this fox.  In terms opinion, while I do feel the eyes could have benefited just a little bit from softer texturing, those looking for a recently created fox with a cutesy spin can easily consider purchasing this one.

I adore this fox I wear mine pretty much 24/7 (and I’m more of a cat person xP) and for the cute little bunny I turned some into chairs to sit on! Not sure if I agree with the leg fluff looking off it would look to flat without it and I also like less shading for the male abs but at least they are soft enough without being to harsh, Honestly I personally think its the best fox out there and with a low price tag and comes with so much its a great buy and its rather easy to mod to! I would recommend anyone to this av if they are looking for a fox :3

While the quality of the sculpts from DSD continue to impress and amaze me, I still have issues with the eyes and shading. The eyes look a bit dead, and the shading looks awkwardly dark in some areas, and almost nonexistent in others.

Though. I still stand by what I said on one of their previous avatars: DSD has some of the cleanest and most impressive paw and leg sculpts of anyone on the market.

I agree. The shades on the prims and skin textures contrast a little too much. Some parts almost look metallic. Structurally though, it’s really well done, ESPECIALLY the leg and paw sculpts.

Thanks for the comment! I’m working on new shadings for the next av and will try to make better eyes. Hope it will be better. If you want to help giving advices or more detailed thoughts about older shades, feel free to tell me inworld :3

Oh my goodness! I wasn’t expecting to get a reply from the creator, haha.

But I’m looking forward to see what the new textures and eyes look like. C:

Oken, I really am a big fan of your work, and I own a number of your avatars on a few different toons. They’re great, and I love the subtle glossiness of them, I love the abundance of options. Hell, you could sell some of your avatar legs + legwarmers alone for the price of an avatar, and you just toss them in as freebies.

What I would personally love to see, though, is moving away from avatars that everybody makes (every avatar maker ever does foxes and wolves, I mean REALLY) and while I understand this undertaking might be to “pay the bills” so to speak, I’d love to see some less common species being made.

Example? There’s precisely two zebra furry avatars on the market, one’s old as dirt with texture eyes and no digigrade legs, the other looks like it was born with a combination of some trisomy or another combined with continuous maternal alcohol consumption. There’s a severe lack of lynxes/bobtail cats. You were thinking outside the box with the lovely Ram avatars, honey… please stick to that mindset.

Love this! I am in awe of the generosity shown by this avatar maker – the inclusion of piercings and little extra bits in the form of legwarmers or in this case, a shoulder bunny, always make the avatar especially exciting when out of the box.
I really appreciate the way that the new versions of the DSD avatars have two colour skins – it may only be a slight difference – but it can really change the appearance. I have the Cheetah and just ADORE it! I was a fan of the original and now even bigger fan of the v2. I am looking forward to the Fen update as it was the first avatar I ever bought in SL.
I would really love to see more avatars that get a moving tongue – occasionally an avatar maker will add one in (such as the Derp ridgeback) but I have to admit I would like to see it become a standard across all makers.
Anyway, love this fox, esp the legs!

I absolutely adore this model. Very well made, and sweet colors to boot. This one I’ve been waiting for, since I have foxes from almost every other maker. Possibly the only one I have that still uses it’s original hair. Definitely a winner in my book. (can’t wait for the new fennec =3)

  • Doc Fox

This is my main avatar. Dark Spot Designs never fail to please and this can be added to a long line of well thought out, well designed and well made avatars.

If they turned their hand to micro avatars and over-sized prim-muscle avatars (like 1st Act size) they could totally dominate SL’s fur-nation.

  • GretSoul Darkfury

What can I say but a wonderful avatar. Smooth textures, both pg and mature. Seamless and well made. I purchased mine after seeing another and haven’t looked back since. Have had no trouble with any kind of mod that I might do. I enjoy the fluid look and animations when coupled with my fem ao and in others words with this avatar, “a very desirable critter..” . Shall continue to keep an eye on DsD and what they have to offer in the future

I think that this is the best fox out there to date, as far as head shape goes. It’s the closest to how an actual fox head would look..while still being different enough in being stylized that it works well.

The only real issues I have with this avatar is the cheek-fluff and ears. The fluff just looks bad to me, as if it wasn’t thought out. The ears I think should be more pointed, and I also do not like the fluff in them either. Far too blocky and heavy-looking. If you swap out the fluff and change the ears, though…Makes for one damn good fox.

Texturing on all of it is wonderful, seems like they’ve got into a good habit with that.

  • Fuss-Budget

Definitely the best fox out on the market right now. Best thing about it, is that it actually looks like a fox. Ironic that there’s so many wolf and fox avatars out that, well, don’t really look like actual wolves or foxes. This is one of the few that looks like it’s species.

I was very impressed with their cheetah avi and all of it’s amazing extras; it looks like I’ll have to purchase this next. And this is coming from someone who doesn’t even like foxes, lol.

The little shoulder rabbit is extremely cute too, though I can’t help but think if it’s a little-sneak preview of what’s to come. :)

  • SadisticE

I love this fox soo much its so cute, <3 I hate that other people that make fox ears point them completely straight like weird triangles. Fox ears are rounded on the tip, its really wonderful that they consider the basic anatomy of foxes when they made this <3

  • Nerxual Oh

It’s cute but head looks very close to Tokushi’s. But fair price for good av, not best but it’s cute.

I love this fox. Its the best i ever saw!

So apparently the owner of DSD got banned for copybotting. o_o

    • Oken

Not at all. Linden Lab actually locked my account ( without warning of any kind ) to force me to prove my RL identity ( pretty rough way to do it… but well ). I’ve spent the whole day trying to fix the issue. And now it’s done. The account is available. In any case it had nothing to do with copybotting or any other griefing thing of any kind. It’s people themselves who assumed so.

    • Butter

Oh wow really? You just HAD to come here and say that? There was no reason for you to come here and say anything -no reason at all-! Please use your own brain next time and wait to hear what happened before you go running off to post -wrong- info and possibly start drama, and in the process, possibly taint a good person’s name who did nothing wrong for the sake of ‘I heard the group say this’ and LL’s bullshit (because we all know how LL can be sometime read the forums sometime) . Honestly you did a dick move coming here and posting that.

    • http://walkingthenewworld.wordpress.com/ Blaze Borgin

My apologies, that was worded wrong. I meant to say that, from what I’ve heard, someone FALSELY reported the owner of Oken for copybotting. I didn’t mean, yes Oken is a botter.

  • Vardin

Perfect head prim. Not so perfect hand prims. His cheetah avatar had nice paws instead of sausage fingers. Beautiful feet, hair and ears. The only thing that bugs me is the huge iris of the eyes, you almost cannot see any white around it. All in all still the best fox av out there, for a reasonable price.

  • DarkFox Keynari

Definitely my favorite fox AV. After buying a KZK, Tokushi, and DSD fox, I have to say DSD was my favorite. Great customization, beautiful textures, well sculpted AVs, and for a cheap price. Personally it’s the best fox out on the market.
